ESSEX County Council has said the way it handled the recent snow and ice was so "effective" that it is going to host a national conference to discuss the issue.

Its leader, Lord Hanningfield, announced today that the authority will hold a 'Snow Summit' in March to discuss the issues surrounding the bad weather conditions, and have called on representatives from other local councils to attend.

A council spokeswoman said: "Local authorities across the UK have proven themselves to be both prepared and dedicated in dealing with the massive challenges this winter has thrown at them.

"The Snow Summit gives them and other interested parties the chance to share their experiences, identify best practice and learn directly from those working internationally.

"Representatives from Scandinavian countries, who deal with harsh conditions year on year, will be invited to share their expertise."

Lord Hanningfield said: “Essex and other Local Authorities have done an effective job in tackling the snow and ice this winter.

"As an innovator Essex County Council is however always looking forward, testing and sharing best practice and finding ways to improve.

"Our Snow Summit will help us start this process as well as shine a light on the very real issues around responsibility. I urge local authorities and other interested parties to take part in this unique event.”

Further details about the summit have not yet been released.
