THE London Mayor told a public meeting last night that he is backing calls for a public review of new London City Airport flight paths.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirmed last month that it will review the new flight paths later this year following complaints from residents in Waltham Forest about increased noise.

But fears that the review could be carried out in private were addressed by Mayor of London Boris Johnson at his Environmental Question Time in Ilford, where he backed the calls for a review in public.

Campaigners against the new flight paths welcomed Boris Johnson's support.

A spokesman for the Fight The Flights group said: “This is great news that we have won the backing of Boris for a public review. Residents were not properly consulted before the flight path was introduced.

"Now is the time for a proper consultation. We feel residents will give a resounding “No” to the flight path.”

The CAA has said the take-off flight path is needed to cater for the increased number of jets using the airport.

But it has resulted in increased aircraft noise across east London. At busy times, a plane takes off over homes every two minutes.
