A DILAPIDATED teaching block at a Redbridge school is set to be demolished and replaced with a new state-of-the-art facility.

The technology unit at Hainault Forest High School, in Harbourer Lane, has been in need of an upgrade for several years, and was described as being unsuitable 'for the delivery of a modern design technology curriculum' by the council.

The multi-million pound redevelopment, which has yet to be rubber stamped by councillors, will see the building of a two-storey block featuring new workshops and a dining hall.

The plan was one of the 'school improvement' options offered by the council during the Redbridge Conversation.

The report, which estimated the cost of the redevelopment at just over £7 million, read: "The school's design and technology block is in poor condition and is not suitable for the delivery of a modern design technology curriculum including the new diplomas available to pupils aged between 14 and 19 years old.

"Initial feasibility identified that it would not be economic to refurbish and extend the existing building.

"The school's dining area is currently housed in a room that is both undersized and environmentally poor.

"An initial feasibility has concluded that extending the dining area in its current location would be both technically difficult and not offer value for money.

"A scheme has been developed to provide a new design technology block suitability for the 21 century curriculum along with new kitchen and dining facilities.

"The school will be able to provide its pupils with a design technology block and dining accommodation suitable for a modern school and teaching a modern curriculum."
