PUPILS of a Leyton secondary school will be discussing international affairs with German children online.

The Year 10 pupils, who attend Lammas School, in Seymour Road, will discuss Europe and environmental issues with pupils at Hamm Europaschule, a school in Hamburg.

The event, during the first week of February, is part of a project to raise awareness of the EU, organised with the help of education charity the Citizenship Foundation.

Pupils will will link up with the German students and will also take part in a mock parliamentary debate, where pupils take on the roles of different political parties to debate environmental policies for Europe.

Lammas School will also be visited by Oxfam campaigner John McLaverty and Member of European Parliament (MEP) Marina Yannakoudakis.

Mr McLaverty said: “The recent Copenhagen Climate Change conference illustrated the vital importance of both governments and civil society working in partnership across national borders.

“This project, bringing together young people from London and Hamburg, provides an exciting opportunity to build on these partnerships and for the participants to make their voices heard on the European stage.“
