ONE of the key figures behind a controversial scheme to build two more golf courses in a village has hit back at his critics.

George Dilloway, a director at Blakes Golf Club, in North Weald, said the new 18-hole and 9-hole courses at his businesses would be good for the village and accused the parish council of being out of touch.

He said: “We are struggling to cope with the demand for golf at prime times as we are open to the public as well as members of the club.

“The new course will also provide the the opportunity for anyone and everyone to enjoy golf. An academy par three course will be totally free for anyone who wants to play or beginners who would just like to try the sport.”

North Weald Parish Council has voted unanimously to oppose the scheme with its members concerned about disruption caused by lorries and the dumping of inert waste to create the courses.

Mr Dilloway said: “The local parish council are promoting these concerns to the public, misleading them to maximise the number of objections.

“Should the parish council be more independent and more in tune with the public they should promote this scheme as it will be a great benefit to the community as a whole.”

Parish councillor Peter Collins, who has been active in opposing the scheme, dismissed Mr Dilloway's accusations.

He said: “Our role is to represent the community and pass on the concerns they bring to me.

“The large amount of people are concerned. Not everyone, but the majority. The majority of local residents are up in arms about it to be honest.

“I sympathise with him trying to get popularity for his project but I do feel he could be more reasonable.”

Mr Dilloway said members of the public concerned with the project could contact a member of staff on 01992 525151.

The final say on the scheme rests with Essex County Council who have yet to set a date to hear it.
