SCHOOLS across Redbridge have been praised for their efforts to encourage youngsters to walk or cycle in each day.

Eighteen of the borough's schools - including Trinity Catholic High in Woodford Green and Churchfields Primary in South Woodford - have been picked out by Transport for London (TfL) for their extra work in helping to diversify the forms of transport used by pupils as part of their 'Travel Plans.'

The schemes were introduced to help reduce traffic congestion around schools and improve the health of students.

A council spokeswoman said: "(The schools) were officially recognised by TfL for going beyond the requirement of their Travel Plan and showing a long term commitment to encourage healthier ways of travelling to and from school.

"School travel plans aim to make it easier for pupils and staff to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to and from school as well as promoting car sharing on the school run.

"The benefits of school travel plans include - less cars and congestion around schools that in turn creates a less polluted, more pleasant and safer environment, healthier more active pupils, families and staff, which can lead to improved attendance and achievement.

"Redbridge Council is campaigning to reduce congestion and parking problems around schools.

"Inconsiderate and dangerous parking can endanger people's lives and is a matter the council takes seriously.

"As a result, we now send a CCTV vehicle to enforce outside schools which encounter these problems.
