COUNCIL leader Chris Robbins is to continue to lobby for more police for the borough, despite the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) ruling out any change to the formula which leaves Waltham Forest with a disproportionately low number of officers.

Cllr Robbins will lead a delegation to City Hall next Thursday to present a petition signed by 7,100 residents who want more police in Waltham Forest.

The borough currently has nearly 200 officers less than other boroughs, such as Hackney, despite having similar population levels and crime profiles.

Cllr Robbins believes the borough is about 120 officers short of what it should be entitled to and will present his case at an MPA meeting.

The MPA has said there are no plans to alter the formula which is used to decide borough police numbers.

Crime statistics revealed today that crime has risen in Waltham Forest by an extra 1,680 reported incidents, this bucks the trend for the whole of London, which has largely seen a reduction in crime.
