RESIDENTS living near the scene of a fatal road accident have spoken about their concerns over dangerous motorists and their sadness at the latest incident to hit their quiet neighbourhood.
Sandra Toner, 51, of Drayson Close, died when she was hit by a 4x4, in Parklands, Waltham Abbey, in a hit and run incident as she was walking her dog yesterday.
Kim Cleever of Newtswell Drive, near the accident site, said: “I was in the other room at the time. It was only when I came out here and I saw the cars weren't moving I noticed anything. They were all turning round because there was a ribbon across the road and they had to turn back.
“I didn't know what happened until they put the ribbon across and then you think 'Oh my God'.
“The police were still here when I went to bed at one O'clock this morning. They had a line of cars and they were parked with their backs to the pavement. They had great big lights on them like a floodlight. It was going into my middle room here and it was all over the ceiling. They were gone this morning when I got up then they were back for a while.
“The main problem here is they've hardly got any lights. Not all of them are on and it's very dark. There's a kink in the road up there and this side and they are two accident-prone places.
“My friend said someone got run over the night before just a bit further up.”
Richard Lewis, 84, of Newtswell Drive, said: “I was sitting at my computer and I heard a bump. Quite what happened I don't know. When we looked there was ambulance, fire engines, police all over the place. They've been there again this morning measuring up.
“People tear along here. It's supposed to be 40mph, but I assure you it's not.”
The 56-six-year old male driver of the 4x4, also from Waltham Abbey, was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, where he is in a stable condition.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call officers at the crash investigation team on 0300 333 4444.
