A WALTHAMSTOW Academy pupil has overcome injury to win bronze for hurdling at an athletics championship.

Sixth form student Huy Vu came third in the South England Indoor Athletics Championships in the under 20s mens 60m hurdles event.

Mr Vu, 18, of Stocksfield Road, Walthamstow, began at the former McEntee School, which the Academy replaced, in 2002, and learned English as his second language.

Mr Vu, who runs for Chingford-based athletics club Orion Harriers, said: “‘Overcoming an injury in both hamstrings last year was very difficult, but with hard work and determination and the support of everyone around me, I was able to keep going.”

The student is now ranked 13th in the country in the under 20s mens hurdles event.

Walthamstow Academy headteacher Emma Skae said: “We are all exceptionally proud of Huy and his achievements. We know that he will continue to succeed in all he does.”
