Witnesses to a fatal car crash have described the scene.

As previously reported by the Guardian, a man died after the crash in Kings Head Hill, Chingford, at about 2.40pm yesterday.

Ambulance crews and police attended, but the 84-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Residents of the busy road said they heard the impact and saw the car after it had hit a lamp-post.

Dinner lady Elaine Kendall, 41, said: "I heard the crash and ran upstairs to the bedroom window, where I saw the car halfway across the pavement.

"I phoned the emergency services straightaway but I couldn't see much because I stayed upstairs.

"It was very quiet out there, there were only a few people standing about.

"It's so tragic what happened, but it could have been a lot worse if anyone else had been injured."

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I heard the crash, so I came out of the house and saw the man in the car."

Neighbours said it was the second crash on the road within a week, after a car smashed into parked cars on Sunday night.

The cause of yesterday's crash has yet to be established, but no other vehicles were involved and no-one else was injured.

The driver of the silver Renault Megane has not yet been identified, but police said his family has been informed.

His cause of death is still being investigated, but unconfirmed reports suggest he may have suffered a heart attack.

The road was closed until 8pm to allow traffic investigators to examine the scene and clear the debris.
