PLANS to build the biggest mosque in Europe on Waltham Forest's doorstep have been halted, it is understood.
Tablighi Jamaat, had planned to build a £100m “mega mosque”, which would have the capacity for 10,000 worshippers, in Abbey Mills, Stratford.
But the group, which has been operating a temporary mosque on the site without permission, has now been issued with an enforcement notice by Newham Council.
Tablighi Jamaat has reportedly failed to meet a deadline for submitting a masterplan and the council is now considering compulsory purchasing the site.
Newham Councillor and leader of the Christian People's Alliance Alan Craig has said he fears Tablighi Jamaat will launch a legal challenge against the eviction.
