NEW benches could be installed in a popular park following a plea from the husband of a disabled woman.

Barry Crace told a meeting of Area One committee last night (Monday) that his wife Veronica struggled to make it from one part of Christchurch Green, in Wanstead, to the other because of the lack of seats.

The 65-year-old, of New Wanstead, said his wife - who suffers from breathing difficulties - found it difficult to use the area of the green opposite the police station since an historic wooden seating hut was removed several years ago.

The couple's wishes could now be granted after council officer Steve Grayer said that spare seats could soon become available after a project is carried out to clear unwanted 'street furniture' from elsewhere in the borough.

He said: "Some seating will be removed which could be recycled and used in our parks.

"The seats would need a new home. Christchurch Green is an option."

Mrs Grace told the Guardian after the meeting: "It would be good to have a replacement for the old seat.

"It would make it that much easier for people like me, and elderly people to get around."
