A BOROUGH-wide crackdown on traders leaving goods in the street is hotting up after a grocery firm was slapped with a £1,200 fine.

Redbridge Council has signalled its determination to stop shopkeepers blocking roads and walkways with their produce, by prosecuting LB Enterprises Limited, in Ilford Lane for leaving pallets containing fruit and veg stacked in the street.

The move, which saw the firm fined by Redbridge Magistrates for 'obstructing the highway,' will cause concern in other parts of the borough, such as Woodford Broadway - where many traders rely on leaving goods on display in the street to attract passing trade.

Many have seen big drops in revenue since they were told to remove them by the council late last year - with most claiming their goods pose no hazard to pedestrians or motorists.

A council spokeswoman said: "LB Enterprises Limited pleaded guilty to two offences and was fined a total of £1,200 and ordered to pay £196.25 in costs.

"Redbridge Council has a responsibility to remove obstructions on the highway which pose a hazard for users and which may affect the use and safety of the highway.

"Redbridge Council will always take any necessary measures to ensure that the public maintained highway is safe to use and can be enjoyed by the public."
