CALLS for safety improvements on a stretch of road where a jogger was fatally injured have been backed by one of the area's most senior politicians.
Residents have demanded a series of speed killing measures be put in place in the Salway Hill stretch of Woodford Green High Road after two pedestrians died following car accidents there during the past couple of years.
A range of ideas - from reducing the speed limit to moving a safety camera further up the hill - have been put forward since 29-year-old jogger Fiona Daniels was run over while trying to cross the road last Monday evening (January 18).
Her death comes just a year after popular boxing coach Norman Yearley was fatally injured near the same spot in January 2008.
Church End ward councillor Richard Hoskins, chairman of Area Two committee, agreed that more needs to be done to prevent further tragedies at the site.
He said: "Twenty is plenty in most areas and I think that's the case here too.
"Drivers seem to have the impression that after chugging through Woodford Green they can just put their foot down.
"People also need to be made more aware of the need to use the pedestrian crossing. This is a dangerous stretch of road and it's important people cross safely.
"If officers recommended that the speed camera is moved further up the hill I would support that. I also think we need to have cameras pointing in both directions."
No arrests have been made in connection with Mrs Daniels' death.
