IF you liked Gosford Park and Upstairs Downstairs then you may want to take a peek at the talk Housekeeping in an English Country Home at Valentines Mansion next Friday, 10.30am-noon.
Discover what it really was like working within the privileged walls of the Ilford estate during the Victorian era, with a discussion based on three housekeeping books kept by the Ingleby family during their employment with the kitchen.
Unfortunately, the original books were lost, but in 1963 Sarah Ingleby’s grandson typed up some of the recipes and the notes provide a useful insight.
The event will start with an introductory talk about Hannah Glasse and Mrs Beeton.
