PLANS to improve safety at two busy road junctions have been given the green light by councillors.
Nineteen accidents - two of them serious - took place at a pair of heavily used mini-roundabouts in Aldersbrook between November 2005 and March 2008 leading to calls for them to be redesigned.
Councillors gave their backing to one of four proposals for the sites - located at the junctions of Blake Hall and Lake House Roads, and Aldersbrook and Centre Roads - during a meeting of Area One committee on Monday evening.
The plan would involve widening the mini-roundabouts which, it is hoped, will force drivers to reduce their speed and take extra care when negotiating them.
Councillors also agreed to look into the possibility of improving lighting at the junctions.
The introduction of traffic signals had also been considered by planning officers, who rejected the idea because of fears it could increase delays at the junctions during peak hours.
A more detailed version of the £225,000 scheme will now be drawn up.
