ALMOST 2,000 people across the borough were caught watching television without a licence last year.
The figures, released by TV licensing, show 1,905 fee evaders were caught in Redbridge in 2009.
However, the borough had a far lower figure than neighbouring Newham which – with 3,807 evaders – had almost twice as many as Redbridge and the highest of any London borough.
Across the capital, more than 35,000 people were caught last year.
TV Licensing spokesman Ian Fannon said: “On behalf of the vast majority of people who pay for their TV Licence, we work hard to catch those who attempt to cheat the system.
“These figures demonstrate that there really is no hiding place for TV Licence evaders, and we continue to be highly effective at catching them.”
A colour television licence costs £142.50, anyone not holding a TV Licence risks prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.
