ARSENAL have been boosted by the news that defender Thomas Vermaelen has not suffered a fracture to his leg after scans gave the Belgian the all clear.

The centre-half limped out of the Gunners’ goalless draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday, with fears growing that he may have broken his leg.

However, Vermaelen is likely to miss Sunday’s game against Manchester United, paving the way for Sol Campbell to make an emotional return to Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger was also lifted by the return of Alex Song and Emmanuel Eboue from the African Cup of Nations, after Cameroon and Ivory Coast were knocked out of the competition.

Eduardo’s hamstring injury, picked up in the second half at Villa Park, was described by the French manager as ‘small, small, small’. Abou Diaby will also be missing for the United match, but could return for the trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea a week later.

“There is no fracture in Thomas’ leg but his injury still has to be assessed,” said Wenger. “There is still a good chance he will not play on Sunday.

“Eduardo has a small, small, small hamstring. He will be out for one week. He will not make Man United but he might make Chelsea.

“However Emmanuel Eboue and Alex Song have been in this morning. Eboue has been running outside. They are both in good shape. Tired but in good shape. Both of them are available for Sunday.

“Unfortunately Abou will not be back this weekend but he could be back for Chelsea.”
