A NATIONAL Christian charity has confirmed it is in talks to save a threatened South Woodford bookshop.
The Wesley Owen Books and Music branch, in the High Road, was one of 27 threatened with closure after the charity that formerly ran the chain went into administration.
A campaign was launched among churches in the area to raise funds to get the store up and running independently, coming up with up to £40,000 in donations.
And Nationwide Christian Trust, based in High Ongar, Essex, has now unofficially confirmed important meetings are being held with concerned parties.
The charity was rumoured to be interested in the South Woodford shop shortly after the announcement was made that the store would have to close.
Residents, customers and church-goers have rallied to keep the store going and Rev Steve Clarke, of All Saints and St Andrew’s in Woodford Wells, described the store as “more than just a bookshop”, calling it a “church in the high street”.
