NEWLY installed measures on a notorious road have failed to stop a string of further motoring accidents.

In the latest incident at least six cars were involved in a multiple collision at Pudding Lane, Chigwell, even though extra measures, including a 30mph speed limit were introduced there in October last year.

Resident Vernon Davies said: “They've put in some of the measures which has helped but it doesn't stop them going fast. There's no enforcement on the the speed level at all. People are going a bit slower but to be honest most of the accidents are on the hill and they haven't put any measures on there.

“They should just close the lane off and make it two cul-de-sacs. There was a petition handed in by every single resident of Pudding Lane asking for that.”

Neighbour Tom Yusef blamed the latest crash, on Saturday, January 30, on black ice forming at a bend.

He said: “Speeding drivers totally ignore the recent 30mph signs and road conditions.

“A female police officer attending this latest incident opined that the only effective calming measure is to have intermittent road humps, interspersed with more build outs- not only a view shared by the residents but what we have been calling for throughout our campaign.”

Among their extra measures Essex County Council were due to make the slip-way-turning into Pudding Lane from Gravel Lane accessible only to buses.

But residents have pointed out, although a bus lane has been painted at the entrance, there are no signs there making enforcement impossible.

Essex County Council have been asked for a comment.
