MORE than 200 traders have already signed up to the new Redbridge Card scheme - which aims to encourage residents to shop locally.
Two hundred and thirty businesses from across the borough are now part of the loyalty programme, including restaurants, fashion retailers, jewellers, accountants and dentists - with each offering special discounts, deals and offers to those who join.
The card was launched this morning at Blush Temples Florists in Wanstead High Street by council leader Keith Prince.
Jude Richards, owner of the store - which is offering 10 per cent discounts on bouquets over £25 as part of the scheme - said: "I feel that the Redbridge Card is an excellent idea.
"It is highly commendable that Redbridge Council is taking a stance on helping the community during the recession, both in terms of helping residents to save money and boost local trade, but also in terms of building strong relationships between local customers and small businesses."
Cllr Prince said: "This is a wonderful initiative which benefits everyone in the borough, residents and businesses alike. We will be working to get even more local traders to join the programme."
A council spokesman said: "The card is being delivered to all households across the Borough in the February edition of Redbridge Life. Details of all businesses involved in the scheme – as well as the deals they are offering – are available at Redbridge i at: redbridge.gov.uk/redbridgecard
"Roadshows promoting the Redbridge Card to residents and traders will be held in town centres across the borough over the coming weeks."
