REDBRIDGE police is urging residents wishing to commemorate the Pakistan or Indian Independence Days to attend pre-planned events rather than celebrate in the street.
The Metropolitan Police is warning motorists to avoid the Ilford Lane area at the weekend.
Officers have also been liaising with Redbridge Council to ensure that Pakistan Independence Day on Saturday and India Independence Day on Sunday will go off without any trouble.
Police in the past have had to deal with public order and traffic problems.
Chief Supt John Boylin, said: "Celebrations in the street cause immense problems which could well lead to someone being injured.
"Although last year's event was more peaceful than previous occasions, we have had problems in the past with anti-social behaviour and hundreds of people running in and out of traffic. Unplanned celebrations of this kind on the streets are not safe and we would ask people to take part in planned events in local halls or homes to mark the occasion instead."
