POLICE are urging people celebrating Pakistan or India Independence Days this weekend to stay safe and go to pre-planned events only.
The police are concerned that people attending unplanned street celebrations may be at risk of injury.
Drivers are also warned that some roads may be busier than usual.
Pakistan Independence Day on Saturday, August 14 and India Independence Day on Sunday attract large crowds of party-goers to the area.
In previous years the problems have mainly affected the Green Street area, Newham and the Ilford Lane area, Redbridge.
This year the police have liaised closely with local councils, businesses and the community to encourage planned festivities at homes and local halls.
Chief Superintendant John Boylin said: "Although last year's event was more peaceful than previous occasions, we have had problems in the past with anti-social behaviour and hundreds of people running in and out of the traffic."
Some roads in the Green Street and Ilford Lane areas may be made one-way and motorists are being asked to avoid the areas if possible.
