AN ANTI-shoplifting scheme which aims to dissuade first-time offenders from re-offending is proving a huge success.
The Retail Theft Initiative, in operation since September 2003, has resulted in 100 referrals to the scheme - over 25 per cent of the total number of shoplifters in Redbridge to date.
Currently Redbridge is the only London borough operating the scheme in its entirety. It is aimed at adults and juveniles who are first time offenders and have been arrested for shoplifting in Redbridge.
The initiative is run by PC Tyrone Frost and acting police Sgt Graham Clarke at Ilford police station, in partnership with M-Power, a crime prevention team based at Station Road, Barkingside.
Explaining the scheme, PC Frost said: "Following initial referral to the scheme all participants undergo a restorative conference where offender and store representative meet face to face.
"A script is followed during the conference to enable all participants to have their say, giving everyone a chance to express themselves.
"This style of conferencing has proven to work towards highlighting any underlying issues that the offender may have, at home or otherwise. If any issues are highlighted, referrals are made to the appropriate agencies that can assist."
Crimebusting organisation M-Power is the leading partner for the Retail Theft Initiative and can assist by facilitating conferences and offering numerous interventions to work with young people aged eight to 17.
The final stages of the scheme are where the appropriate reprimand or police caution is issued.
