PUPILS at a Redbridge school are set to vote in their very own version of the general election today (Thursday).

Youngsters at Wanstead High will cast their ballot during a mini version of the national poll - with the result likely to be as close as the real thing.

Students at the school, in Redbridge Lane West, got to learn more about some of the candidates running for Leyton and Wanstead after members of the Film Club asked them for their favourite movie titles.

The hopefuls were each requested to recommend a film for the club's 'Candidates Choice' season, with Liberal Democrat candidate, Farooq Qureshi, Conservative candidate Ed Northover, Labour candidate, John Cryer and Green Party candidate, Ashley Gunstock, all responding.

Mr Qureshi chose 1982 classic Gandhi, Mr Northover selected The Quiet American, Mr Cryer suggested A Man For All Seasons and Mr Gunstock chose Supersize Me.

Tracey Phillipson, Film Club leader at Wanstead High, said: "Film Club's 'Election' season of films, which includes titles such as Animal Farm, Duck Soup, Cry Freedom and the classic 1930s flick Mr Smith Goes To Washington, has got tens of thousands of students all over the UK talking about the importance of democracy.

"The school vote is being organised by Phil Scott, assistant headteacher, who has arranged a school vote for every election since 1983 and every time the party that has come first in the school vote has come first in the national vote.

"The Election season has been just one element of a very busy month for Film Club at Wanstead High School.

"Film Club also brought their 'On the Road' team to see us enabling all 80 of our year 10 media students to see a film in true Film Club style.

"Astro turf was laid out, bean bags and a big screen were put in place as popcorn was handed out in readiness for a screening of Somers Town.

"After the film a number of the students had the chance to write reviews on Film Club's website with one, Eleanor Jackson, winning a prize for her Review of the Week.

"In fact, she was Film Club's featured review of the week which is the top accolade and her review featured on: filmclub.org home-page.

"We've also been busy with our younger Film Club with Miss Revan leading some animation workshops with students making their own films.

"Students came up with storyboards, created backgrounds from boxes and characters from plasticine and then used stop motion techniques to create their own short films.
