HE may have been knocked out of the X-Factor more than a year and a half ago, but Woodford Green's very own pop superstar Austin Drage is about to face the biggest gig of his life when he plays alongside Elton John.

The 23-year-old, of Montalt Road, has managed to carve out a successful solo career since he shot to fame on the hit TV talent show back in 2008, playing at countless shows across the world with the likes of Rod Stewart and Rihanna, and meeting celebrities such as former American president Bill Clinton along the way.

But next Thursday (May 20) he will perform at one of the most high-profile events of his career, when he supports the pop piano megastar at the 10th annual Caudwell Children Charity Ball in Battersea.

Speaking to the Guardian ahead of the gig, Austin said the show would be on of the highlights of his career so far.

He said: “I just feel really excited about it – it's going to be fantastic. Elton John is one of those people who whether you're a fan or not you have to acknowledge how good he is.

“The last year has been absolutely mad. I just seem to be busy all the time.

“But it's been amazing travelling around the world and meeting so many great musicians. And Bill Clinton was really cool. He's a great saxophonist so when said he loved my singing it was a big compliment.”

Despite his high-flying aspirations – Austin is currently recording his debut album and wants to eventually record a duet with Stevie Wonder – he said he would never neglect his Woodford roots.

He said: “I visit my mum and dad and friends all the time, I will never lose time for them.”
