Catch a Rising Star is an appropriate title for this Sunday’s showcase performance by Palmerstone Stage School at the Kenneth More Theatre.
The school, which is based in Newbury Park, and has members from across east London, has an impressive alumni, so you might be watching a stage or screen star of the future.
Among former pupils of the school are Nic Greenshields, from the West End production of Phantom of the Opera, Jenny Powell, of Wheel of Fortune fame, and former EastEnder Sophie Lawrence.
Choreographer Loraine Porter says there are a lot of talented singers, dancers and actors at the school.
“They do quite a lot of work. A couple of kids have been in Billy Elliot. We have a little girl who has been in the Wizard of Oz at Harlow with Joe Pasquale.”
The variety show is an annual event at the Kenneth More Theatre and features songs from a number of shows.
The cast is made up of seven- to 17-year-olds, and mixes performers that have not been on stage before with others who have performed several times.
“It’s a new thing for a percentage of them, but a lot of them have done things before,” Loraine says. “They have to start somewhere.”
The school has been running for more than 20 years and Loraine says she is seeing some former pupils return.
“They’re starting to come back with their own kids,” she says. “It’s lovely and they stay friends for life.”
Catch a Rising Star is at the Kenneth More Theatre, Oakfield Road, Ilford. Sunday, May 16 at 7pm. Details: 020 8553 4466, www.kmtheatre.co.uk
