ESSEX County Council is urging more children to walk to school, as new figures reveal under half of youngsters in the district do so.
According to the authority, 49 per cent of pupils currently travel to their lessons by foot, two per cent lower than the county average.
It comes ahead of 'walk to school week', which runs from this Monday (May 17) until Friday (May 21).
A total of 41 schools in the district are taking part in the event, which will feature lessons encouraging children to walk more.
County councillor Norman Hume, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “This is a fun and engaging way to get children into the habit of walking to school.
"It’s not all about walking though, there are many different ways to get involved, for instance, children can also use their bike, get the bus or train, or even car share. This also helps to reduce congestion around the school.“
