THE owner of a shop plagued by thieves and vandals says police should do more to protect the area.
Tony Ayodele-Fadipe, who is the franchisee of Budgens, in Larkshall Road, Highams Park, said his shop has been broken into eight times in the past two years and has also been subject to repeated attacks by vandals.
The latest incident, on Sunday, May 9, involved would-be thieves attempting to break into the building by smashing through a wall.
They were unable to gain entry to the shop, but managed to steal about £1,500 worth of cigarettes.
The building was also damaged during the attempt and Mr Ayodele-Fadipe said it will cost about £5,000 to repair.
He said: “I don't think the police are doing enough because I believe they have never been able to get anyone for these crimes.
“If the police really want to do something about the problem they should do regular patrols.
“After about 10pm it is completely quiet in the area.”
The 50-year-old said he has improved security at the store but is unable to employ full-time security guards because his shop has to be locked and alarmed at night so no-one can be in the building and there is nowhere else for them to go.
He said his insurance company have altered his policy following the spate of break-ins and he now has an excess of £10,000 to pay before they will cover any costs.
Police are investigating the recent burglary, but have so far not arrested or charged anyone in relation to this or any of the other incidents.
A spokeswoman for Waltham Forest Police said: “A number of burglaries have occurred at the premises over the previous 12 months. Forensic searches have been conducted when necessary.
“The police Crime Prevention advisor attended in August 2009 and made a number of recommendations to improve security.
“Hale End and Highams Park Safer Neighbourhoods Team are aware that the store has suffered from recent burglaries. The team are patrolling in and around the area to combat and deter anti social behaviour."
Anyone with information about the incidents should contact the Safer Neighbourhoods Team on (020) 8721 2646, or Crimestoppers anonymously on (0800) 555 111.
