MEMBERS of the district's Jewish community celebrated with song and dance at the completion of a new holy scroll.
Chigwell & Hainault Synagogue, in Limes Avenue, Chigwell, commissioned its new Sefer Torah scroll from a specially trained scribe 18 months ago, and many of its members contributed to its funding.
With the ink now finally dried, the newly completed scroll was carried to the synagogue through the streets of Chigwell under a special canopy amid singing, music and dancing.
Once the scroll was safely lodged at its new home, a service of thanksgiving was held to pay tribute to the generosity of everyone who had contributed to the project.
Synagogue life president Percy Sonn, who attended the ceremony with his children and grandchildren said: “I feel so privileged to be sharing in this wonderful occasion, which I will always remember”.
Guest of honour Ilford North MP Lee Scott said: “I am delighted to see such a wonderful example of co-operation and community spirit, which bodes well for future generations.”
