A CHINGFORD man has been jailed for his part in a robbery where a man was beaten with a baseball bat.

Selwyn Cephas, 26, of Hazel Way, was jailed for eight years and three months for robbery and other offences following the attack in Bell Lane, Hendon, last October.

His accomplice Daniel Greenwood, 30, of Palmers Green, was jailed for seven and a half years. A third man wanted for the attack has not yet been traced.

Police said three men forced their way into the premises after a woman opened the door to them.

Having bundled into the flat, the woman's boyfriend recognised one of the men as Greenwood, who was carrying a baseball bat.

He used the weapon to smash the 32-year-old occupant round the head three times before Cephas picked up a crash helmet and struck the man again.

The three men then began to search the flat looking for money.

Officers said the victim was able to get the balcony and call to neighbours for help. Greenwood went over to the man, who then managed to trap the attacker's arm in the balcony door.

The two other men went to help and the woman used her the opportunity to escape.

Cephas tried to run off when police arrived but he was chased and caught.

Greenwood escaped but was caught later in the investigation.

Detectives said the victim suffered bruising and swelling to his head and had a cut to his arm, but was not seriously hurt.

Detective Sergeant Andy Goodwin of Barnet CID said: "It was the quick thinking of the victims and the fast response of the police officers that helped bring these men before the court.

"The sentences passed reflect the serious nature of the crime and the court has sent a clear message that this type of offending will not be tolerated."
