A SCOUT group has marked its centenary year with a host of outdoor activities.

Waltham Abbey Scout Group set about on a series of special events to mark its 100 years including visits to Copped Hall, and the Epping Forest Field Centre, in High Beach, where they helped to clear nettles and create a natural habitat for wildlife.

They also took on a number of challenges including pioneering, building a bridge, and making bread twists.

With their activities completed, the scout group marched to Waltham Abbey Church for a Centenary Service with anyone involved in the group over its 100-year history welcome to take part.

The oldest attendee on the day was 89 and had been involved in Waltham Abbey scouting for nearly 80 years.

Group scout leader Ken Stanger said: “After the service the Rev Joyce Smith blessed a tree and plaque, which was planted in the grounds of the Abbey Church to mark the 100 years.

“We then went back to Elphwood for refreshments and to see a display of old photos and trophies that showed the history over the past years.

“A lot of old memories were recalled and the 89 year old gentleman cut a cake that had been made specially for the occasion.”
