THE District council is due to spend over £200,000 on double-glazing at its Civic Offices.

Epping Forest District Council says the existing single-glazed windows at the Condor Building, in Epping High Street, are 40 years old and cause significant heat loss.

Tender estimates received to install the new windows are £40,000 higher than expected, so councillors are now being asked for permission to transfer the extra money from a maintenance budget.

The council's report states: “The installation of new double glazed units and infill cladding panels will have a significant impact on reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions and improving heat retention within the building.”

Officers have already agreed to sign-off £154,046 towards a new heating and hot water service for the Condor building after reports that the current system is inefficient.

The council estimates the new heating system and double-glazing will save it £20,000 a year on energy costs.
