A CAR driver survived a narrow brush with death after an 18-tonne lorry landed on his car after driving straight into a low bridge.

The lorry stuck the bridge over Forest Road in Barkingside, which carries the Central line just metres from Fairlop Tube station.

Due to the angle at which the lorry struck the bridge, it rolled onto its left-hand side and landed on top of a red Vauxhall Astra estate.

Incredibly the driver walked away from the accident unscathed, to the amazement of ambulance staff and onlookers.

The lower edge of the bridge is painted with black and yellow hazard markings, with a 'Low Bridge' sign clearly displaying that vehicles only have a clearance of 14 feet.

According the Evening Standard, the only person hurt in the incident was a man who ran into a wall as he fled the scene.

A TfL spokesman said: “Our structural engineers checked the bridge and confirmed it was in good condition.”
