SUSPECTED illegal workers were arrested during a raid on a rubbish collection depot.

Border Agency officers supported by police targeted Verdant’s Low Hall Depot on May 25 and arrested eight people on suspicion of working illegally in the UK.

Two Nigerians, a Ghanian and an Algerian have been charged with possessing counterfeit documents and remanded in custody after appearing at Waltham Forest Magistrates’ Court the next day.

They are due to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court at a later date.

The UK Border Agency says it is taking steps to remove the remaining four, two of whom remain in custody, from the country.

Deputy Director Tom Greig, head of the UK Border Agency’s Waltham Forest and Newham Local Immigration Team said: “We’re committed to removing people who have no right to be or work in the UK, and we’re working closely with other agencies and local authorities to do that.

“Employers unsure of the steps they need to take to avoid employing illegal workers can visit www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/employers or they can call the UK Border Agency’s Employers Helpline on 0300 123 4699.”
