A DECISION on whether the council will receive £1.7 million to build the first council homes in the borough for 20 years is expected in three weeks.

Waltham Forest was hoping to spend the money on 22 new homes.

Although the cash from the Homes and Communities Agency was previously approved, the commitment was put on hold by the Government.

The new builds were set to usher in a new era of council developments to ease a worsening housing crisis.

David Lunts, HCA director for London, said: “The London HCA has around £150 million of uncommitted funds for the rest of the year.

"We will be considering how to allocate this remaining expenditure together with our partners and the HCA London Board and expect to make further announcements within the next 2-3 weeks.

"This funding is in addition to our already confirmed budget of around £1 billion.

“All individual Kickstart and Local Authority New Build bids which have not yet received confirmation will be assessed as part of this process.

"At this stage however, we can’t make any firm commitments.”
