ON THE face of it, we'd be mad to turn down someone who put away 49 goals in 48 games last season.

Feel free to call me cynical here, and I have a thick skin, but I'm not sure I'd welcome Luis Suarez making a move from Ajax to White Hart Lane, as is rumoured.

Anyone that scores more times than the number of matches he's played is obviously a class act. But there are a number of important things to remember when considering how well he'd do in the Premier League.

The Dutch top flight might be good to watch but the quality of football is sometimes questionable.

Leaving aside cheap gags about even Steve McLaren being capable of win the league title, the defences of even the top sides can be a bit shaky, and so a goal-scoring record like Suarez's should be taken with a pinch of salt.

After all, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored hat-fulls for the Amsterdam side before his inevitable big money move to a top league, and he's hardly set the world alight since.

Plus I seem to remember Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt netted a few while playing in the Eredivise too. Enough said.

Add to that the fact that Prem is played at a pretty frenetic pace at the best of times, especially with the kind of speed we have in our attack, and I'm tempted to think he doesn't necessarily have the pedigree for the league.

But, in his favour, he was pretty pivotal in Uruguay's impressive run to fourth place and scored three goals during the tournament At 23, he's also certainly young enough to adapt.

Signing a player from a foreign league is always a gamble, and the telling factor will be how much we would have to pay.

Only if it's less than we would have to fork out for a striker with a more proven record will I be convinced it's a risk worth taking.
