WILD songbirds are being snatched from their habitat and sold in markets and shops.

The police’s Wildlife Crime Unit are appealing for help to track down those responsible for the illegal trade, which is a common practice in parts of the borough.

Songbirds, particularly Goldfinches, are being caught in the Lea Valley Park area and caged before being sold on.

Three wild Goldfinches were recently seized by police, who cautioned those responsible for their capture and sale.

Sgt Rowan Healey, of the Met's Wildlife Crime Unit, based at Chingford, said: "We've already recovered three caged birds but know that this is now common practice in some parts of the borough. As the birds are often on full display it's clear that some members of the community are unaware that it's an offence to capture wild birds and sell them on."

Trapping wild birds has been illegal since 1981 and most are caught using another bird to lure the wild finches into a waiting trap.

Police say any bird for sale without a metal ring around its legs is likely to have been caught illegally.

Sgt Healey added: "The three birds we have retrieved could be just the tip of the iceberg and we need to send out a message to those intent on breaking the law that their actions will not be tolerate.

“Our wildlife is precious and the Lea Valley area is a surprisingly rich and diverse area. Thousands of people visit to enjoy the natural attractions and Lea Valley is a nationally renowned urban bird watching area. If the public remain vigilant we can help the wild birds to thrive in the area."
