A RECOUNT of a disputed council election result will be held in August, Waltham Forest Liberal Democrats claim.
The party petitioned the High Court for the recount after a member of the public spotted a possible error in the results for the election on Thursday May 6.
It is believed an extra 1,000 block votes were mistakenly given to Labour candidates. If proven, this meant an extra Labour councillor was wrongly elected in Walthamstow's High Street ward at the expense of Lib Dem nominee Mahmood Hussain.
The council's returning officer at the time, former chief executive Andrew Kilburn, said tiredness could have been to blame for the alleged error.
Former Lib Dem councillor Bob Wheatley told the Guardian his party had been informed that a recount would now be held on either Monday August 2 or Thursday August 12.
It had been originally due to be held in July but legal complications had delayed the proceedings, Mr Wheatley added.
The Guardian is awaiting confirmation from Waltham Forest Council.
