A DISABLED grandmother who died four months after being rescued from her burning home has been laid to rest.
Family and friends stood in silence outside the Sleeping Beauty Motel in Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, as a horse drawn carriage carrying the body of mother-of-three June Garvey began its journey to St Mary’s Church in Church Road, Leyton, at 9am yesterday (July 22).
The procession, which included a car adorned with flowers spelling out the message “I love you mummy”, stopped briefly outside Mrs Garvey’s former home in Warren Road, Leyton, where flowers were laid.
Solemn tributes from friends and family were read out during a service.
Mrs Garvey, who was left disabled following a brain haemorrhage 12 years ago, spent months fighting for her life after suffering 40 per cent burns during a fire at her home in Warren Road, Leyton, on February 22.
Her husband of 44 years, Peter, had returned to the house to find their daughter, Kirsty Garvey, screaming for help as a fire ripped through their home.
He pulled his wife from the burning building with the help of neighbours.
The 63-year-old was given a 50-50 chance of survival after undergoing emergency surgery.
She finally succumbed to her injuries on June 24.
A post-mortem carried out on June 30 was inconclusive and an inquest has since been opened and adjourned.
paying tribute to her wife, Mr Garvey said: “There were so many flowers sent, we had to order another carriage to carry them.
I met June at my brother's wedding back in 1965,” Mr Garvey continued.
“She was such a lovely woman. We fell in love and spent 44 wonderful years together.
“This is such an important day for our family. We want to give her a really big send off.”
Her daughter Julie Taylor, who spent the last six hours of her mother’s life by her side, said: “I want the world to know just how much I loved her. This has been a very emotional time for us all.
"She would have loved seeing all these people here - to see her grandchildren one last time and how strong they have been.
“I am going to miss her so much.”
The cause of the fire is not known.
