PEOPLE with learning disabilities are being given the chance to grow their own organic fruit and vegetables thanks to a new intiative.

The 'Sprout There!' project is a Lottery-funded scheme which helps people who might not otherwise have the chance to keep an allotment to learn about growing produce, and using it to cook healthy nutritious meals.

They will also learn about healthier living, plus the participants will also have the chance to secure employment using their new skills.

Russell Lerner, director of the Uniting Friends charity which runs the scheme, said: “Sprout There! is a ground-breaking project that will offer users a great opportunity to learn about growing, cooking and healthy eating in a fun and practical way.

“Users can join us for between two and five days each week, and the service is free of charge unless personal support is required.”

The project will hold a recruitment day on Wednesday August 11 from 11am to 4pm Redbridge Lane West Allotments in Wanstead.
