LEYTON Sixth Form College has been left very happy after its latest Ofsted inspection.

Ofsted praised the college for providing “good quality education and care for its students”.

Principal Kevin Watson was applauded on his “outstanding leadership in ensuring that all staff place teaching and learning at the heart of the college’s work”.

According to the Ofsted inspection report, students benefit from the “good teaching, resulting in good levels of achievement and high rates of progression to higher levels of study, training or employment”.

Mr Watson said: “I am delighted that the inspectors gave their blessing to so much of what the college has put in place. In particular they recognised our absolute commitment to providing the best possible teaching and learning and to helping students achieve their full potential – all this in a safe, friendly, supportive and stimulating environment enriched by many extra-curricular activities.”

The report went on to say that “high levels of personal support from teachers and tutors” was helping develop “students’ confidence and self-esteem and raise their aspirations”. The college was also praised as a safe place to learn where “equality and diversity underpin all aspects of the college’s work”.

“Enrichment activities are extensive and participation by students is good. The impact of participation is analysed well at college and subject level and had improved students’ performance in many areas”, the report said.

Mr Watson added: “We intend to live up to the report’s description of Leyton as an organisation with a “relentless drive for quality improvement”. We intend to remain true to our own values and principles in the years to come, and if that pleases future inspection teams, so much the better.”

The report went on to say that staff throughout the college share ambitious plans and targets for the future.

“The principal has had a significant impact in promoting high expectations for staff and students and ensuring that teaching and learning are central to the college’s work. The college is characterised by a strong sense of shared purpose, energy and focus,” the report added.

The college is also undergoing a rapid £40 million transformation which, once complete, will feature state-of-the-art teaching facilities. All curriculum areas will benefit but highlights include a purpose-built theatre, TV studio and an industry-standard recording studio and a new sports hall and fitness suite.
