A MULTI-MILLION pound scheme to redevelop Leyton's run down roads is under way.

More that £2.5million worth of improvements to Ruckholt Road started on Monday (August 2), while further works to Leyton High Road are expected to be approved at a later date.

Cabinet agreed the initial £950,000 investment on the road last month, which will include the expansion of the pavement, the installation of new lighting and the removal of "street furniture" in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympics.

Work is expected to finish in September next year.

A council spokesman said: “Work on the Leyton street, which leads to the Olympic park and is expected to be a major pedestrian route in 2012, will dramatically improve the appearance of the area.

“The design will feature granite paving at junctions to make the area look nicer and trees will be planted to complement the new street lighting which will be installed.”

Councillor Clyde Loakes said: “Leyton is a fantastic vibrant area and we’re investing millions in making it a nicer place for residents, businesses and visitors.

“This work will dramatically improve this area and we hope it will help to attract businesses and visitors from across London and beyond who can enjoy the vibrant and culturally diverse community which Leyton boasts.”
