WALTHAM Forest Council has paid out almost £50,000 in compensation to people who have injured themselves falling on pavements in the past two years.
Figures obtained by the Guardian reveal that more than 100 people have sued the authority because of trips and falls in the borough since July 2008.
Payments to claimants have varied widely, however.
The council paid out just £40 to someone who injured themselves on the footpath in Wellesley Road in Walthamstow in April last year.
But just a few months later it handed £5,436 to a resident who fell in Walthamstow market.
A total of 20 people have received compensation, with another 20 cases being thrown out by the council.
But the vast majority remain unresolved.
The payments include £2,000 for a fall in Belgrave Road, Walthamstow, £1,800 for an injury in Ruckholt Road, Leyton, £2,600 for an accident in Larkshall Road, Chingford and £5,500 for an incident in Avon Road, Walthamstow.
The biggest payment was for a fall outside Blackhorse Road Underground station in Walthamstow, with £6,500 being paid out.
The Guardian is awaiting a comment on the figures from Waltham Forest Council.
