PARENTS have vowed to keep their children away from a troubled primary school for a day in protest at a plan to remove governors.

The council says it will put an interim executive board in charge of Willow Brook School in Church Road, Leyton, which was recently placed in special measures.

Ofsted inspectors expressed concern about falling standards at the school and said it was unlikely that the current leadership could turn things around.

But some parents say the council has not provided adequate support and wants the existing staff and governing body to be given a chance to raise standards.

Parents are planning to protest outside the school on Thursday, when they will keep their children out of classes.

The Guardian understands the school’s current headteacher, Theresa Busbey, will now be supported by an executive headteacher, understood to be Norman Clare of Yardley School in Chingford.

Parent Sima Hussain, 28, of Goldsmiths Road, said: "Desperate times calls for drastic measures. I am a parent and this matter affects my child.

"The children are going to have an absent mark and when the school rings up we will tell them we are striking.

"We want our community and Waltham Forest to know what is happening at our school."

Another parent, Masood Khan, 46, of Church Road, said: "We hope that by protesting the council will take back their proposal and give support to the head and the teachers."

Many parents have sent emails and a petition signed by 200 people asking Education Secretary Michael Gove to reject the council’s proposal.

Waltham Forest Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Saima Mahmud, said: "We know significant improvements are required and we are determined to raise standards before Ofsted’s next visit.”

"We will be proposing the establishment of an interim executive board to assist the current management of the school in improving standards and moving this school out of special measures."
