FAKE condoms could be circulating in the borough.
Trading standards officers visited a shop in Leyton following a tip-off from a member of the public, and 33 packets bearing the Durex label were found to be counterfeit.
The council has therefore warned consumers to beware of imitations and plan to carry out checks in stores across Waltham Forest.
Clyde Loakes, cabinet member for the environment, said: “These condoms are poorly made, haven’t been tested and had microscopic holes in them.
“Anyone using them runs the risk of infection, a nasty allergic reaction, sexually transmitted diseases and an unwanted pregnancy.
“People might think using cheap condoms is a good way to save money over Christmas, but the long-term costs to your health and that of your loved ones is not a price worth paying.”
Young people in Waltham Forest can get free contraception by applying for a C Card through NHS Waltham Forest, which can be picked up at a wide range of youth clubs, medical centres and pharmacies across the borough.
“There's absolutely no need for them to be buying condoms – either from shops or other suppliers,” said Yaccub Enum, from NHS Waltham Forest.
