A POST-MORTEM will be carried out on a 69-year-old man who died in a four-vehicle pile-up.
The man died after the accident on the A12 outside Newbury Park tube station on New Year's Day (Saturday, January 1).
Officers were called to the scene of the crash at 3.55pm, and found that the man, who was a passenger in a green Citroen Picasso, had been killed.
Police say they know his identity but are waiting for formal identification and confirmation that his relatives have been informed before releasing further details.
Police said the post-mortem will be carried out at East Ham Mortuary tomorrow (Tuesday, January 4).
Following the crash, the 61-year-old woman driver of the Citroen and a second male passenger, thought to be in his 60s, were taken to an east London hospital.
The driver has since been discharged, while the passenger remains in a stable condition.
Three people travelling in a blue Ford Focus – two women and a man, who are all in their 20s – were also taken to an east London hospital and remain in a stable condition.
London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service also attended the scene of the crash.
A date for an inquest has yet to be confirmed.
Following the crash, a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was later bailed to return to a police station in east London in May, while the police investigation continues.
Officers are still appealing for witnesses to the crash, and anyone with information should contact the Road Death Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage on 020 8597 4874.
