POLICE have renewed a £20,000 reward for information about the murder of a have-a-go-hero, one year on from his death.

Sukhwinder Singh saw a young woman being mugged in Loxford Road, Ilford, and chased after the robbers before being stabbed.

He was knifed through the heart at the junction of Victoria Road and Uphall Road at around 6.40pm on Friday, January 8, last year.

The 31-year-old, of Harts Lane in Barking, was taken to the Royal London Hospital where he later died.

One of his attackers was black, 5ft 10in to 6ft, and skinny with young-looking features. He was wearing a black hooded top and light grey jogging bottoms.

The second was a lighter-skinned black man, 6ft and stocky, with possible facial markings or facial hair. He was wearing a light blue hooded top with markings on the sleeves.

Police say more than two robbers may have been involved.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Clayman, who is leading the investigation, said: “I appreciate that some people are not comfortable speaking to the police but I would ask them to put aside any pre-conceptions they may have and trust the police to deal with their information responsibly.

“Those holding information must understand that catching the killers is their business and not someone else's.”

The stolen bag was brown and leather and had a light and dark brown pattern, was 10-12 inches long with two side zips, one straight and one curved, and had two straps with a buckle on one.

The handbag and the phone have not been recovered, but officers say they might have been thrown away in a garage near Charlton Crescent, about one-and-a-half miles from the murder scene.

Two teenage boys told police they saw a similar bag hanging on a fence there a week after the murder, but it had gone the next day.

Det Chief Insp Clayman added: “In relation to the outstanding property, did you see the handbag or mobile phone in the garage area off Charlton Crescent? Were you ever offered a silver Samsung slide phone?

“If you have any information at all, however insignificant you think it might be, please contact us.”

Police made a series of arrests in the weeks after the murder – three men in January and two in March – but they were all released without charge.
