THE CAMPAIGN to bring dog racing back to Walthamstow Stadium will be honoured with an award later this month.

The Save our Stow (SOS) campaign will receive the Harry Lloyd Services to Greyhound Award, as voted for by the Greyhound Writers’ Association.

The future of the iconic venue remains uncertain.

Owner London & Quadrant (L&Q) hopes to build housing and leisure facilities on the site, while millionaire Bob Morton has offered a deal to bring back greyhound racing.

A crunch meeting involving L&Q, Mr Morton, Chingford MP Iain Duncan Smith and council leader Chris Robbins is due to take place on January 28.

Mr Duncan Smith has provisionally accepted an invitation to the awards on Saturday, January 23.

The Work and Pensions Secretary has been a high-profile supporter of the campaign, as has Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy, who is also set to attend.

Rick Holloway, from the SOS campaign, said: “It's really great and it's in recognition of the sustained campaign, and also in recognition of the parliamentarians who have got involved.

“It comes at a good time as Iain Duncan Smith and the leader of Waltham Forest Council Chris Robbins will sit down with Bob Morton on one side and L&Q on the other on January 28.

“L&Q will be represented by their chief executive David Montague, and it's the first time he's got personally involved.

“It's the borough's heritage, that's what's at stake here.”
