POLICE investigating the unexplained death of a woman following a house fire are appealing for witnesses.
The 27-year-old, who has not been named, was found dead following a fire at her home in Palmerston Road, Walthamstow, last Tuesday (January 4).
An initial post mortem concluded she died of smoke inhalation and burns.
But police say further tests have been carried out and now they cannot say for certain what caused her to die.
Police have refused to say whether they think the fire was suspicious, pending the outcome of further investigations at the scene.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Rickells, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said: "My thoughts and sympathies go out to the family who have lost a loved one in this tragic incident.
"A comprehensive fire and forensic investigation continues at the scene and will continue for some time.
"If you were in or around Palmerston Road, E17, between 8.20pm and 9pm on Tuesday, January 4 and have any information about the fire or noticed any vehicles or people in the area, please contact the incident room on 020 8345 1570 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
It is thought the woman who died was married with children, but none of her family were at home at the time of the blaze.
Police have not named the woman because she has not been formally identified yet.
